The 3R’s principles remain a fundamental concept in laboratory animal science today aimed to improve the welfare of animals used in research, education, and testing. 

Today, the 3Rs principle is the basis for animal welfare policy and the practice of modern research approaches involving laboratory animals, with application to the conduct of studies used in domestic animals as well as wild animals or birds that might be the subject of research projects. It is the prerequisite for official approval of animal experiments by an Animal Ethical Committee. This is yet a challenge in many developing countries due to the lack of national and/or local guidelines. This is the gap ACURET have been working to bridge in the last decade.

Most biomedical and life science experiments in developing countries are conducted in universities and research institutions, using animals. The preconference workshop is aimed to stimulate and enlighten those who use animals that in doing so, they must become aware of the great obligation they have for the welfare of the animals entrusted to them and for the expert performance of the experiment

The preconference workshop is composed of three parallel workshops, on each of the ‘R’ conducted over a 5-hours training program, split across three sessions from 9.00 AM till 4.00 PM with breaks in between to allow for detailed and pragmatic learning by attendees. The workshop is open to mostly post-graduate students, junior faculty, veterinarians, physicians, biomedical scientists, research administrators and technicians. The capacity for each session is limited to 20-25 participants only, to allow for adequate Instructor/participant interactive engagement.

The 3Rs workshop will run three parallel sessions (Refinement/Replacement/Reduction) and a participant can only attend the same ‘R’ session for the day on the same principle for maximum outcome benefit and a certificate of completion in addition to the certificate of attendance and a discounted workshop fee. A separate registration is required to secure a seat.
