Occupational health is a cardinal tenet of lab animal welfare. ACURET posit that ‘human wellbeing is a requirement for humane lab animal welfare’. The One Health, One Welfare Walk is a demonstration to draw public and governmental attention in developing countries to the importance of occupational health and safety in every occupation, more important when handling lab animals in the pursuit of scientific knowledge for the benefit of man and animals. Attendees will join the company of other participants to walk along designated routes in the city, singing and dancing to live band music, with occasional stops along the route. It is anticipated that attendees will equally gain an important lesson of considering their health and wellbeing while working with animals in any capacity, to bring same to the attention of their Institutional Responsible Official for implementation. ACURET’s position is that “Hazard allowance is not a commiserate compensation”. This is one of the focal points of the 10th year anniversary celebrations.

Anniversary Dinner – Saturday, Dec. 3rd ,2022
In appreciation of a decade of working to challenge the status quo on the use of animals in developing countries, which now has encouraged a reorientation of mind sets that “they are not just rats”, We give thanks to God for the Journey so far and the journey ahead in the next decades. The Conference & Anniversary Diner will appreciate the engagement of several individuals and groups who believed in the ACURET dream at inception inspite of the many upsets and challenges to convince persons about ‘doing right the right way’ by their research animals. The passing away of the Navigator and pioneer Chair of what we now know as ACURET, the late Prof. E. Ademola Caxton-Martins, even before the organization was formally incorporated did not deter the objective. The dream was sustained by a team of five eminent African Scientists working and living across geographical distances and time zones, but yet, have the primary goal, to promote humane animal care and use for scientific purposes in developing countries alive. There will be plenty of variety to eat and drink with dancing and comedy laughter to hold your heart merrily. The Anniversary Dinner has been heavily subsidized to enable all Attendees and their accompanied persons to attend and enjoy this unique feature of the Conference and capping of the 10th year Anniversary celebrations. Payment can be made during online registration of on site at the conference. Anniversary Dinner payment closes on December 1st, 2022., to be included.

The ancient city of Abeokuta is the of Ogun State capital in Nigeria. Abeokuta is made up of two local government areas, Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South covering an area of 879 Km2 within Ogun State – “Gateway to Nigeria” -, notable for having a high concentration of industrial estates and being a major manufacturing hub in Nigeria. The current metro area population of Abeokuta in 2022 is 557,000. Agriculture is the major occupation of the people of Ogun State, which is favoured by the climatic condition.
The name of the town “ABEOKUTA” was derived from the protection which the fleeing settlers sought under the Olumo Rock, now a tourist center in the town. Abeokuta means ‘the refugees under a rock’, signifying the protection which the Olumo Rock offered the refugees from possible attacks. Abeokuta was founded as a replacement for Orile Egba in around 1830 by the Egbas after the collapse of the Oyo empire during the civil war. As an ancient city, Abeokuta was the location to produce the first newspaper in Nigeria (Iwe-Iroyin, 1859, by the Rev. Henry Townsend), the First Baptist Church in West Africa and the first hospital in Nigeria, which is Sacred Heart Hospital. Abeokuta was a walled town, and relics of the old wall still exist. Notable buildings include the Ake (the residence of the alake), Centenary Hall (1930).
